Booksource has proudly launched our Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Boxed Sets for grades K-2. These Boxed Sets support current NGSS curriculum and can be used to help teachers incorporate more nonfiction and science content area reading into daily instruction.

Why did we create the NGSS Boxed Sets?

Did you know that current research shows that science is being taught for only an average of 18 minutes per week in K-3 classrooms? Teaching with NGSS Boxed Sets can increase the amount of time spent on science instruction by making it easy for teachers to integrate science into reading, and reading into science.

What is an NGSS Boxed Set?

It’s a collection of nonfiction science books and supporting resources that help teachers integrate science into reading instruction using step-by-step lesson plans and activities. Because the largest deficiency in science instructional time is in grades K-2, the NGSS Boxed Sets are available for Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2.

What’s included in an NGSS Boxed Set?

–> 30 books (1 copy each) that support the NGSS Framework

–> One bound Instructional Resources book with 30 title-specific, differentiated, step-by-step lesson plans

–> Dividers and a storage box to help teachers stay organized

Advantages of the NGSS Boxed Sets

Step-by-step plans: The expertly curated books and title-specific Instructional Resources help teachers seamlessly implement science into their reading instruction. The Instructional Resources are also one of the best and most unique parts of the NGSS Boxed Sets.

Here’s what the Instructional Resources look like!

Differentiation: Each lesson plan contains differentiated Learning Paths allowing teachers and students to select the path most appropriate for their students. “Path A” provides increased learner support and “Path B” provides more independence for learners. This allows a teacher to easily differentiate instruction. It also means that each title essentially comes with two lesson plans.

Minimal prep work: These lessons are ready-to-go with minimal prep work, which means they are great for sub plans or teachers new to using real books in their classrooms.

Time-saving: The Resources are robust, created specifically for each title, and truly give teachers back their time because they are not writing lesson plans or trying to coordinate their reading lesson to a science standard. This is all done for them!

Versatile: Another great aspect of the NGSS Boxed Set is that it can be used in the classroom in a variety of ways. For 1:1 instruction, teachers can provide focused reading support with an emphasis on comprehension or content-based instruction for students. For Whole Group or Small Group, teachers can provide instruction using one copy as a read aloud. They can also purchase 6-packs, which are available to purchase separately, for guided reading in larger groups.

Support for intervention and home connection: The home connection means Title I funds can be used for purchase!

Engaging content: All books feature recent copyrights to ensure current, engaging content and high-resolution photos.

Benefits for every teacher & student

The primary goal of the NGSS Boxed Set is merging content area instruction with reading objectives. Teaching with real books helps students by providing context and examples for their learning.

It is vital that we help young students learn how to discuss open-ended questions and gather evidence to support claims. These skills help students excel in science and provide benefits throughout their lives. And isn’t that what every teacher wants for their students?
