No matter how many days you’ve been staying at home to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), you’re probably feeling at least a little like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Hours suddenly turn into weeks, and we’re all in desperate need of a change of scenery.

It’s important to remember that students are no different! They’re probably also feeling restless, and their parents and guardians are looking for productive ways to occupy their time.

The good news is that one of the best ways to ensure their literacy skills and their interest in learning continue to develop is also an amazing way to escape: READING! As you know, books can take your students to every corner of the globe, in any time period or even to fantasy worlds. But let’s take it a step further and switch up physical perspective as well as mental

Sometimes, finding a fun and comfy spot to settle into a good book is all that’s needed to reinvigorate the brain and add variety to each new day. Here are some reading spots to share with the families of your students—or enjoy yourself!

1. In Your Backyard

Doesn’t fresh air sound wonderful? As the weather warms, lying down in the grass or under a tree can be an amazing way for children to feel more connected to the natural world during a time when moving from the living room to the kitchen feels like an excursion.

2. In a Hammock

Speaking of backyards—setting up a hammock can make any book feel like a vacation read. You could even try setting one up indoors if you have the space.

3On the Porch or Patio

To avoid grass stains, stick closer to the house. Bonus points if you have a comfy porch swing! You can even break out the sidewalk chalk to draw characters or discuss what the kids are reading.

4In Your Windowsill

Maybe all that’s needed is a glimpse of the outdoors. Find a window seat or pull up the best armchair to set the scene.

5. In a Blanket Fort

Grab your pillows and bedsheets! Kids will have a blast building and personalizing their own reading fort in your home. Don’t forget to make and hang a “do not disturb” sign to make sure no one interrupts the latest page turner.

6. Under the Covers

Some of the most exciting experiences for young readers happen when it feels like they’re staying up past bedtime—even if it’s an illusion. Give them a flashlight and let them revel in their covert mission.

7. In a Closet

Another dark space, the closet can really set the mood for a mystery, thriller or adventure book. Look for dress-up items that fit the characters to really inspire creativity.

8. In the Bathtub

Let kids use their imagination to pair reading in the bath with a nautical title. Or take any new read into the empty tub with a pillow for a new view.

9In a Pile of Plush Toys

Collect all the household favorites and arrange them on the floor for a reading spot as comfy as the couch, but way more fun.

10. At the Park

If you need to get away from the house altogether, walk to the park and find a bench, picnic table or grassy spot. Remember to follow social distancing guidelines and stay at least six feet away from other people.
